If you really dig around the 1946-50 period had TONS of great stories and books written about returning vets and their assimilation to society, and more importantly to civillians the impact of a sudden infusion of 16 million ex servicemen.
No one knew what to expect---every other wars end brought bad economies, and the specter of the Depression loomed large, but people also seemed to have a feeling that they WERE on the verge of something bigger despite the pre Korean War cynisism
